Making my 110 CSW road worthy again, rebuild thread

#1 Post by Landy Mann » Sun Aug 07, 2011 5:40 pm

Welcome to my thread about my 1993 Defender 110 Ex-Hartwell demonstrator as I get her back on the road, as yet she has no name but thats sure to change soon. Heres a pic of the old girl and if I get my way she won't be getting washed anytime soon!
Image
Only about 111k miles so hardly run in yet!
Image
It looks like someone else may have been after her as well I found this on the ground after removing the front carpets.
Image
I've always known that a bulkhead swap or extreme repair would be in order, which way should I progress?
Image
Image
As soon as I mentioned to Biosbill what I was getting he said that the rear doors would probably need replacing... I think he was right!
Image
Today I tried to go to halfrauds to get a 150 piece socket set but they apparently had some in stock but couldn't find them :S I had a good poke around with the hammer and found the front out riggers also need replacing and the rear crossmember might need to be repaired (it's been previously replaced). And started to remove the side steps as they're rusty bent and getting in the way.

Thats all folks, if you have any questions or comments I'll try to answer them but I'm posing this on LRO, Landrovernet, Young Guns Classics and Practically Classics so might not have chance for a while.

Oh and my aim is to be road worthy by October....

Thats a very, very dead bulkhead. The one on my 66 IIA is better. Its shocking how bad they can get on Defenders of this age. Good luck with the rebuild.

Well no news is good news as they say... Well in this case it was more of no news is no news, I've not had time to do anything due to my summer job! However I've now got transport arranged so it'll be coming to uni with me, the aim is that it will trailered up there but will be driven back before the rent on the house runs out in 9 months time...

I'll add some photos on when the move happens.

Doors? Bolt on some decent ones, job done. They're cheap enough in any specialist breaker.
As for the bulkhead? To repair that will need a load of dismantling with the rot up around the screen. If it really is as shonky as it looks, bit the bullet, unbolt the front end and put a new one. If you get a second hand one, any repairs can be done easily with 100% access. Rust proof and paint to within an inch of its life, swap it out. It all unbolts which makes it so much easier.

I dread to ask what the rear crossmember is like.

Remember its a landrover. The alloy outer panels hide rot well, and the things run well even when completely shagged past the point of no return.

At least parts are cheap... ;)
Landrovers and Welding go together like Bread and Butter. And in the wet they are about as structurally sound

If I find a set of cheap doors I'll put them on, if not the door cards will be put back on and the MOT will be taken (not sure if they're a fail item or not), Yep the fronts coming off, and I'll most likely attempt to repair the bulkhead and the cross member was done a couple of years ago, but desperately needs rust proofing. Getting the bulk head off will also allow the out riggers to be delt with!

Well things have started moving on the 110, first off I got it moved upto Shropshire with me, using Taurus Transport Services, ran by Dan/22900013A who provided a prompt friendly and efficient service, I highly recommend them if you need a land rover or other vehicle moving. Now in Shropshire Will/Biosbill has given it a good looking over and we've compiled a list of what needs doing, the electric problems that I may have mentioned were one blown fuse and low battery voltages causing the problem. So before the MOT I need some new wipers, bulkhead out riggers, bulkhead and rear xmember welding doing, as I've mentioned before the chassis in remarkably good. The the rear end cappings are rusted right the way through in places so I'm planning on replacing them with the galvanized items off an 88inch series. The other place thats been set to work on is the side steps, with one off and the others needing to attacked with an angle grinder. Will we see the MOT station before Christmas? Lets hope so!

Things have been moving again, we've adjusted 3/4 wheel bearings with one to go. I've stripped most of the dash out so we don't set fire to it when the welding starts! While taking the dash off I found a 3rd wire on the clock the seemingly doesn't go anywhere (unless I took it out of the radio)anyone know what it's for (see photo). I know have the steel so the welding might start some time soon. I've also take one of the head lights out (hence the cyclops look) which needs the lens and bowl replacing due to more rust damage.
